Sun & Sauvignon: Tour Vineyards near Torrevieja

12th March 2021

Torrevieja and the Costa Blanca may be better known for beautiful beaches than vineyards and wines, but the coast’s sunny Mediterranean climate is perfect for growing Moscatell grapes (used in sweet white Muscat, a popular dessert wine). Further inland, where the climate is drier, grapes for red Monastrell (or Mourvedre) wine are grown. These grapes produce a rich, full-bodied, rustic red wine with a history stretching back to 500 BC, when Phoenician seafarers brought the grape to this region.

If you consider yourself an oenophile (or just enjoy a glass while drinking in beautiful surroundings), exploring the vineyards near Torrevieja is a real treat. The region may not be as famous among wine lovers as Rioja and Ribero del Duero, but there is plenty of wonderful winemaking and gastronomy to uncover in the area. Here are a few of our favourite vineyards and wineries near Torrevieja…

1. Bodegas Cerda

This elegant winery is located 50 minutes north of Torrevieja, amidst beautiful scenery in the little town of El Fondó de les Neus. Founded in 1885, the Bodega offers a very wide selection of high-quality Spanish wines which visitors can sample. The Bodega includes a small museum, cellars, a producing room, and charming grounds, which can all be explored on a wine tasting tour. Guests can enjoy wine tasting and a tour for €15, or book a tour and tasting lunch (where wines are paired with delicious tapas) for €60.

The mission of Bodegas Volver is to nurture longevity and prestige in Spanish winemaking. The vineyard here includes vines up to 90 years old, rediscovered by owner Rafael Cañizares. The bodega crafts innovative, well-balanced wines, using Monastrell, Tempranillo, Merseguera, Macabeo and Moscatel grapes. Tours, tastings and even dinners are available here, with a range of options to suit all visitors.

The walk will introduce you to the history of the area, as well as the history of local Monastrell and Muscat grapes. “It was lovely to hear the waves and to have a sunny balcony. The location was handy for everything. We felt safe for evening walks and there were lots of good places to eat. We’ll possibly rebook and would recommend to others.”
