Torreviejawood: 4 Films & TV Shows Shot Near Torrevieja

3rd February 2017

Western town in Almería, Spain

Consider yourself something of a cinephile? Spain is a fantastic destination for movie lovers keen to enjoy the scenery of their favourite films and TV series. Today we’ll be exploring some of the famous filming locations which can be found within 3-4 hours of Torrevieja.

Not only does this list provide an opportunity to visit the backdrops to big movies, it’s also a fantastic way to explore the region and enjoy some of the best scenery this corner of Spain has to offer.

Lights, camera, action!

1) Red Sun, Almería

Starring Charles Bronson and Ursula Andress, this 1971 movie is a classic vintage Western, following the adventures of a gang of thieves seeking their fortune, who rob a train and steal a priceless ceremonial Japanese sword. Filmed around Almería in the Desert of Tabernas, around a 2-hour drive from Torrevieja, the Wild West is waiting to be discovered in the East of Spain!

2) The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, Almería

Again, shot amidst the desert-like scenery of Almería, this (Spaghetti) Western classic is a truly iconic piece of cinema history. The film stars Clint Eastwood in a tale of bounty hunting, uneasy partnerships, loot and danger amidst the backdrop of the American Civil War – all shot in Spain. A Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More were also shot here. Take a trip out to the purpose-built set (Fort Bravo) – which is virtually untouched – to get a real flavour of the Wild West. Also, not far from Fort Bravo, there’s Western Leone, which was used for Once Upon a Time in the West.

3) Game of Thrones, Peñíscola

Game of Thrones is a huge draw for lovers of on-screen action and adventure. Many of the scenes depicting Mereen were shot in Castellón – a 3-4 hour drive North of Torrevieja – in the beautiful coastal town of Peñíscola. Even if you’re not a big fan of the show, this beautiful spot is well worth exploring.

While we’re on the subject of GoT, it’s also worth noting that Almería has also been used for some shots, particularly for Season 6, which is (as this was published) the most recent season. A list can be seen here.

4) Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade, Almería

We return, once again, to the Desert of Tabernas outside Almería – this time with Harrison Ford and Sean Connery in tow. The third instalment of the hugely popular Indiana Jones franchise was filmed, in part, right here in Spain at this hugely popular location, which has also been used in movies such as The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2009), Sexy Beast (2000), Conan The Barbarian (1982) and Zorro (1975).

“The best features of the apartment were its location and its cleanliness; also, all shops and bars were on your doorstep; plus you have the beach. All in all, a fantastic place to stay!”
