3 beautiful Torrevieja cycle routes
1. Dique de Levante (beach cycle)
Distance: 3km
Difficulty: Easy
There are plenty of easy paths and routes to enjoy along Torrevieja’s seafront. To cruise along the water, begin your ride at the northern end of Playa de Los Locos (Los Locos Beach) and follow the paths south along the beach, passing plenty of perfect spots for sunbathing and ice creams. Join the Dique de Levante and cycle along the dam to Torrevieja’s lighthouse. From here you can return and enjoy the marina, or continue your beach adventure by riding south along the coast. Flat and easy to cycle, with plenty of rest stops, this is a brilliant bike ride for families with kids. Don’t forget your swimwear for a refreshing dip!
2. Torrevieja Greenway (Via Verde)
Distance: 6.8km (one way)
Difficulty: Moderate
This gentle walking and cycling route runs along an old railway line, rejuvenated and transformed into a lovely recreational path. The route starts at the old railway station, which now houses the Habaneras Museum, beginning with three kilometres of well-made cycling and pedestrian paths (be sure to stay in your lane!). The path then becomes a dirt track, which is easily cyclable on a hybrid or mountain bike. The Greenway curves through the countryside and around the salt lakes, ending at the entrance to La Mata Natural Park. Here cyclists can return along the Via Verde or ride back to Torrevieja along the quicker CV-90 road.
3. Sierra de Callosa de Segura (mountain route)
Distance: 30km (one way)
Difficulty: Hard
If you fancy a challenge and a bit of an incline, this route will take you up Torrevieja’s closest mountain, Sierra de Callosa de Segura. Start your journey on the Via Verda (see route 1). Turn right halfway along the lake at the roundabout, joining Calle Vicente Solano Ruiz, then onto the CV-905. Follow CV-905a through the town of Benijofar. Continue northeast past San Bartolome and Rafal, until the route begins to wind upwards to the southern outskirts of Callosa de Segura. The town makes a charming rest point before you tackle the rest of the mountain. Here you’ll find a history museum, a small agriculture museum and a charming church. Beyond the town, the path up the mountain is winding, reaching a peak of 573 metres.
