Our Guide to Visiting Torrevieja with Your Dog
29th October 2016
Torrevieja is a fabulous spot for dog lovers searching for some sunshine to share with their four-legged friends. Home to a community of dog lovers, this stunning South Eastern spot in Spain’s stunning Alicante region is full of amazing services for canines and fantastic walks to take with your pooch on holiday.
If you’d like to really get away from it all without leaving your beloved pet at home, we’ve put together a complete guide to holidaying with your pup in Torrevieja.
Getting here
Although Brexit may change things for British pet owners in Europe in the coming years, until the UK officially leaves the EU it’s relatively straightforward to travel with your pet within the region as long as you (and they!) jump through a few hoops first. You’ll need:
- A pet passport (available from most vets)
- To get your dog microchipped
- To arrange & record a rabies vaccination after the microchip & at least 21 days prior to travel
- A tapeworm treatment before travel
- A tapeworm treatment 1-5 days before your return
- To travel using an approved route and an authorised carrier
Although some major airlines – including Ryanair and EasyJet – do not allow pets (with the exception of guide dogs) onto flights, other airlines do. It’s worth making an enquiry to find out about prices and requirements from each airline.
If you’d rather steer clear of the stress of air travel with your animal, you may want to consider ferry routes and self-drive options to carry you and your pet to Torrevieja. In terms of the UK in particular, ferries run from Portsmouth to Bilbao, which is a reasonable 7.5 hour drive to your destination and one of the least stressful routes for travelling with animals. Other alternatives include a longer drive through France and Spain with one or two stopovers, should you decide on a more leisurely pace via the Eurostar or a cross-channel ferry.
Best walks for dogs in Torrevieja
Torrevieja is a naturally stunning area, great for sightseeing and strolling. For holidaymakers visiting with dogs, this means that there are some prime spots for amazing walks that you and the pooch will adore. La Salinas de Torrevieja (the area’s picturesque salt lakes) are well worth a visit.
Elsewhere, Playa Flamenca, en Orihuela Costa, is one of the few dog-friendly beaches in the area. Be warned: walking dogs on non-designated beaches can land you with a very hefty fine. An evening stroll with your pup along the city’s Dique de Levante is another fabulous route.
Torrevieja dog kennels & services
With so many dog lovers living and visiting in Torrevieja, there is no end of services to keep your dog in tip top condition during its stay. From vets and grooming parlours across the area (and plenty of options to be found via local online forums), to kennels for owners keen to take some time off during their holiday, services are plentiful. Sites like DogBuddy.com reveal a wealth of potential local dog sitters to take care of your pup while you enjoy a day trip or evening out too.
Staying at an apartment with your dog
If you’re planning on staying at a Torrevieja apartment with your dog, it’s best that you double-check with the apartment owner before booking that it’s ok to take your trusted pet along. For example, for our apartments, dogs are allowed, but we ask that guests inform us before booking, that they keep their dog inside the apartment at night (e.g. not on the balcony), and to try their best to make sure that the dog is not noisy at nighttime or that it does not cause any damage to the apartment. Other than that, you should be all good!
Los Locos Beach Apartments provide a collection of animal-friendly self-catered apartments along the beautiful sands of the Playa de Los Locos. For more details about our holiday rentals in Torrevieja, please explore the rest of the website and book with us today!
