A Winter Guide to Torrevieja

19th December 2019

Winter fairy lights photo

You might associate the Costa Blanca with sea, sand and summer fun, but Torrevieja and the surrounding area is just as wonderful during the winter months. In December, for example, the town sees an average of just three days of rainfall, while the average temperature ranges from a very pleasant 8-17°C. Similar weather can be expected throughout January and February, until the spring arrives in March.

But it’s not just the good weather which makes Torrevieja an unexpectedly brilliant winter getaway destination. Home to both beautiful scenery and a lively local culture, there are plenty of activities and events to entertain visitors to the region during the winter months. To inspire you to enjoy a Feliz Navidad or Feliz Año Nuevo in the Costa Blanca this year, we’ve come up with some of our favourite winter activities in the area…

Explore the Cycle Routes of Torrevieja

There are a number of beautiful cycle routes in Torrevieja that are perfect for exploring during the milder winter months. A great starter route is the Vía Verde (or green way), which is roughly 7 km long and starts at the Railway Station Park, takes in the Laguna Rosa and then runs along the old railway line from Albatera.

Another lovely alternative is the route along the Parque Natural de La Laguna de La Mata – La Mata’s Lagoon Natural Park. As one of the most important natural spaces in the area, it’s a must-see, and a great place to enjoy the local wildlife.
And don’t worry if you don’t have your own bike – there are a number of hire shops dotted throughout the town where you will be able to rent bikes by the hour, day or week.

Golf and Spa at La Finca

At just under 20km from the center of Torrevieja, La Finca Golf and Spa Resort is the perfect place for a luxurious winter day trip. The course itself is every golfer’s dream: nestled amongst mountains and the coast, it is one of Spain’s best. With generous fairways and spectacular greens, it’s perfect for golf enthusiasts whatever their handicap, and with the warm Torrevieja climate, you really can play all year round.

For those less than inclined to play a few holes, the spa at La Finca is equally worth the trip. Offering a full range of treatments from massage to hydrotherapy, La Finca spa is the perfect place to get away from the hubbub of Torrevieja and experience a day of unparalleled luxury.

Party on the Beach on Christmas Day

Celebrate Christmas Costa Blanca-style by partying on La Zenia beach on Christmas Day. This family-friendly event sees thousands of people, of over 100 nationalities, arrive on the beach, armed with barbecues, good food and good cheer. The official party starts at 11am, but it’s wise to arrive a little early to get a parking spot and a prime location on the beach.

Enjoy Chocolate & Churros at New Year

Torrevieja is a wonderful place to celebrate New Year’s Eve, with cafes, restaurants, bars and clubs buzzing with locals and visitors alike. Don’t forget to book a table to avoid disappointment! After the clock strikes midnight, Torreviejans like to celebrate the New Year with a sweet treat: chocolate con churros!

Celebrate the Coming of the Three Kings

The 6th of January is a special day in Spain, as families throughout the country celebrate La Fiesta De Los Reyes, the day when the Three Kings were said to arrive at Bethlehem.

Parades will be held throughout the Costa Blanca on the evening of the 5th of January, and Torrevieja will – of course – be holding its own. The Three Kings arrive by boat at the harbour, and are then taken from the Dique de Levante past the Monumento al Hombre del Mar and along Calle Ramón y Cajal, Zoa to Calle Ramón Gallud. The parade finishes at the main entrance to the Iglesia de Inmaculada Concepción, in the plaza de la Constitución. The 6th of January is Epiphany, when Spanish children open their gifts.

Join Torrevieja’s Carnival

Winter visitors who come to Torrevieja in February will be treated to a lively carnival. This local fiesta runs at the same time as carnival in Brazil, with much the same flavour. Expect music, dancing, colourful costumes and a big party to conclude the celebration.

Watch Local Live Music

Torrevieja has a lively music scene all year round. On most evenings you can find a venue being serenaded by a performer. There are many different music nights to choose from, too – from jazz jams at Magani La Zenia to rock, pop and soul every Monday at St George’s Gate.

Learn Salsa on the Beach

In 2018, Torrevieja launched an initiative introducing a range of free activities to Torrevieja’s beach during the winter months. There are many free activities you can try your hand at, including salsa dancing, pilates, zumba and even gymnastics. Keep your eyes peeled as you stroll past Playa de los Náufragos to take part in a free class.

Take a Cultural Tour

If you happen to encounter one of Torrevieja’s (very) few rainy days, why not take a tour of the town’s museums and cultural highlights? The Museum of the Sea and Salt, the Habaneras Museum or La Imprenta are all open throughout the year. You can even take a tour of a real submarine by visiting Submarine S-61 Dolphin in Torrevieja’s harbour.

Be Spell-bound by a Show

The town’s Auditorio de Torrevieja has a jam-packed calendar, full of musicals, orchestras, ballets and even circuses for the whole family to enjoy. Throughout winter 2019-2020, visitors can be swept away by festive big band concerts, Annie the Musical, the Torrevieja Orchestra, the Acrobatic Circus of China and even a Dire Straits tribute concert.

Take a Winter Walk on the Beach

With highs of 17°C, Torrevieja’s beautiful beaches are perfect for strolling, even in the middle of winter. At this time of year, there is much more space on this coastline’s golden sands, and visitors can enjoy some peace and quiet along the shoreline. If you’re feeling brave, you could even take a slightly chilly dip! There are many beaches to explore along the coast of Torrevieja, perfect for long afternoon strolls. Why not walk along El Cura, La Mata, Los Locos, Los Náufragos or Punta Prima to find your favourite local beach?

“Great weather, great location and our 2nd year in a row in the same apartment. Perfect summer break. Fantastic local restaurants and superior sea views. If you have been self catering before then you will be happy with both the apartment facilities and the price of living in Spain at the moment. We lived like kings. We did the excursion to Isla de Bakara from the marina and it is a fantastic day out. Glass bottom boat with submarine vision, my little one loved it and Glorias restaurant on the island is well worth a visit. I have not gone all inclusive for 4 years now. Self catering is both cheaper and more rewarding for food and experience in comparison. Will be back next year, enjoy.”

“A very well managed holiday booking. We were very pleased with the welcome pack and would recommend this to everyone. The apartment was very homely and very clean. It had everything you needed and more. The long sandy beach was lovely and clean and your recommendations for places to eat were very useful. The apartment block and grounds were very well maintained and the pool was lovely and clean. It was also very quiet, which was nice.”
