5 Things to Do in Torrevieja for Christmas

30th November 2016

Christmas trees in Torrevieja

Update: Although this was originally published in 2016, this post contains information on Christmas activities and events that are applicable to future years, too!

Are you travelling to Torrevieja for some winter sun over the Christmas period this year? With average December temperatures of 11°C, highs of 16.8°C and plenty of sunshine to enjoy, the weather makes a pleasant change from the usual miserable Christmas drizzle and perishing cold back in the UK and elsewhere in Europe.

But what about all the Christmas traditions at home? The carols, the Christmas markets, the Christmas dinner with all the trimmings?

For festive traditionalists travelling from the UK, all the home comforts of a British Christmas can be found on your (much warmer!) doorstep, with a whole host of British-owned bars and restaurants offering Christmas meals and festive cheer (just make sure that you book in advance)! There are also plenty of crossover British-Spanish festive traditions to join in with, which will help you celebrate the season in Spain to the full.

Here’s our pick of Christmas activities in Torrevieja…

1. Visit the Christmas Market

Featuring all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a British Christmas market, Torrevieja’s Spanish equivalent includes an array of festive treats and gifts for sale, along with Santa’s sleigh, nativity animals, storytelling and plenty of fun activities for children. Usually held from 19th-22nd December around Conception Street, keep your eyes peeled for posters and events published on www.torrevieja.com.

2. Watch the Three Kings Parade

For a more Spanish flavoured Christmas visit, don’t miss out on the town’s annual Three Kings Parade or Cabalgata de Reyes on 5th January 2017. Unlike your typical British Christmas, the Spanish do the bulk of their celebrating after the New Year, giving gifts on the day the three kings brought gold, frankincense and myrrh to the newborn Jesus. Arriving by boat at 17:30 in the port, the three kings then make their way through the town via the Dique de Levante, the Monumento al Hombre del Mar and the Calle Ramon y Cajal before finishing in the Plaza de la Constitucion outside the church.

3. Celebrate Christmas on the beach

To enjoy some local festivities on Christmas day itself, take a trip out to nearby La Zenia beach where locals congregate in their thousands to hang out and celebrate on Christmas Day and throughout the festive season. Expect to see plenty of Father Christmas outfits, live music and to enjoy plenty of food and drink.

4. Sing carols at Plaza de la Constitucion

Outside Torrevieja’s central church, those craving a taste of home can enjoy Christmas carols sung in English – an event which attracts crowds to the town centre and creates a lovely homely vibe. Keep your eyes open for posters and announcements online for the date of this year’s carol singing event.

5. See in the New Year Torrevieja style

The seasonal partying in Torrevieja begins in earnest with the New Year’s celebrations. Counting down to midnight in the main church square is a great experience. Join the locals eating grapes, drinking champagne and hugging absolutely everybody to enjoy a uniquely Spanish festive occasion.

“The apartment has 2 bedrooms, full air con and a washing machine. It is a perfect location, loved people watching on the balcony in the evenings and waking up to the sound of the sea in the mornings. Everything you need is local, lots of restaurants and a brilliant supermarket below. If I could change just one thing it would be to stay longer. Thank you Bernard for once again a really lovely holiday. We will be back!”

“We had a wonderful, relaxing holiday and it was lovely to be back in your apartment after so long. It was great being able to hire beach towels. The grab rails in the bathroom were a great addition too. The airport transfers went very smoothly and were so convenient for us. From the time of booking, the instructions and recommendations; everything was easy and reassuring. Thanks very much for everything. It felt just like home and we will definitely be back next year.”
