5 Fantastic Day Trips to Take from Torrevieja

6th November 2017

Sea, sun, sand, food, fun and friendliness – Torrevieja is a wonderful Costa Blanca town, full of things to do. Whether you’re a keen golfer, a watersports enthusiast or a culture vulture, you’ll find no end of activities to make your holiday one to remember in this charming former fishing town.

With so much on your doorstep, spending your getaway in this lovely corner of Spain is easy to do, but if you’d like to see a bit more of the country, there are some fantastic destinations you can enjoy located within easy reach of Torrevieja. Whether you’re interested in castles, countryside or nightlife, there’s an amazing day trip for all tastes to be taken in this region.

Here are five of our favourite day trips from Torrevieja…

1. El Castell de Guadalest

Located an hour and a half’s drive from Torrevieja, the mountain town of El Castell de Guadalest (or simply “Guadalest” for short) is home to fabulous scenery, a collection of fascinating museums and a rich history. The cobbled streets of the town will lead you through charming medieval architecture and take you to attractions including a miniature museum and a museum full of torture implements – all located in the midst of the Sierra d’Aixorta, close to a very scenic reservoir.

2. Cartagena

Take an hour’s drive south (or navigate public transport for around three hours) and you’ll reach historic Cartagena. Home to a striking Roman amphitheatre, ancient villas, a Roman forum, Punic walls, Casa Fortuna and art deco architecture, this is a beautiful destination, with plenty to see and do. Indulge in some retail therapy, taste some top notch tapas, take a boat trip or visit the city’s twin fortresses while you’re here!

3. Fuentes del Algar

Located around an hour and half north along the Costa Blanca, nature lovers will be wowed by the stunning Algar waterfalls (known as the Fuentes del Algar by locals). A pleasant (not too taxing) 1.5km route will lead you around some of the most scenic spots amidst the cascades, and you can even take a refreshing dip should you fancy a swim!

4. Altea

If you’re something of an art lover (or just love experiencing something a bit different), a day trip an hour and a bit north to the town of Altea is an essential expedition from Torrevieja. Here you’ll discover a vibrant community of artists, packed with galleries and exhibitions. The historic blue tiled roofs of this artistic town make it a pretty spot to visit in its own right – with an authentic Spanish feel.

5. Isla Tabarca

Enjoy a slice of island life during your Torrevieja holiday by taking a fun 40 minute boat or catamaran ride over to Isla Tabarca. Located on a maritime reserve, this is a fabulous spot for snorkelling, while on dry land the 2km island has a colourful history to enjoy. Once home to pirates and a fascinating local community, this pretty spot is well worth exploring if you fancy taking a Torrevieja day trip.

“We had a great time and a comfortable stay, the apartment has all the facilities one could think of. The location was perfect, just across from the beach with plenty of restaurants to suit all budgets. Kids had a good time. We received very good care from the management services who were at phone’s end. Right from the start of booking till the end, everything was organised. The rental price was very reasonable. Shall definitely come back and also recommend to family/friends.”

“Great weather, great location and our 2nd year in a row in the same apartment. Perfect summer break. Fantastic local restaurants and superior sea views. If you have been self catering before then you will be happy with both the apartment facilities and the price of living in Spain at the moment. We lived like kings. We did the excursion to Isla de Bakara from the marina and it is a fantastic day out. Glass bottom boat with submarine vision, my little one loved it and Glorias restaurant on the island is well worth a visit. I have not gone all inclusive for 4 years now. Self catering is both cheaper and more rewarding for food and experience in comparison. Will be back next year, enjoy.”
